PSB Insights recently collaborated with Fannie Mae’s Economic & Strategic Research (ESR) Group to measure how workplace flexibility has evolved since the pandemic and affected housing preferences in the post-pandemic era through Fannie Mae’s National Housing Survey® (NHS). The survey was conducted among a nationally representative sample of 1,000 U.S. consumers each month from January to March 2023 (Q1 2023). Renters and homeowners were surveyed to explore how the opportunity to work remote or hybrid has impacted work and housing preferences since the onset of the pandemic.
In Fannie Mae’s NHS special topic analysis, key takeaways include:
- Remote and hybrid work has remained surprising constant in the post pandemic era which indicates that despite headline-grabbing news of companies return to the office, workplace flexibility is here to stay.
- Among workers with workplace flexibility, the willingness to move farther away has grown.
- Affordability has grown as a top consideration among renters when planning for their next move.
- The suburbs led as the preferred location to buy a home for both renters and owners.
